Planning a wine tasting trip to Seneca Lake? Whether it’s your first visit to the Finger Lakes or you’re returning to discover a few new favorite wineries, a little planning can help you make the most of your time here. Below, we’ve answered some of the most common questions about visiting the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, including wine tasting costs, reservations, transportation, winery hours, food, visiting with children or dogs, where to stay, and more. Consider this your starting point for planning a fun, relaxed and memorable visit to Seneca Lake wine country.
IF IT’S A TRAIL, CAN WE WALK IT?
The Seneca Lake Wine Trail is home to dozens of member wineries. Although it’s called a “trail” – it is not for walking or hiking. Trail simply refers to the fact that our wineries are concentrated around Seneca Lake and located relatively close together (usually a few minutes’ drive to the next winery), making for a wonderfully easy visit. Going to the wineries is something you do at your leisure, while driving (we highly recommend a designated driver) or hiring transportation to take you from winery to winery.
How much does wine tasting cost on Seneca Lake?
Wine tasting fees vary by winery and by the type of experience you choose. A standard tasting at many Seneca Lake wineries is typically around $10–$15 per person, while specialty tastings, food-and-wine pairings, tours and other elevated experiences may cost more. For example, some specialty experiences currently range from about $20 to $65+ per person.
Because tasting options and prices can change, we recommend checking individual winery listings when planning your visit.
Do Seneca Lake wineries require reservations?
Most Seneca Lake wineries welcome walk-in visitors, although reservation policies vary by winery. Reservations may be recommended or required for certain tasting experiences and are often necessary for larger groups. CLICK HERE to view our guide to winery hours, offerings, and reservation details.
If you’re visiting during a busy fall weekend or traveling with a group, it’s always a good idea to review each winery’s current policies before your trip. Some wineries also limit group sizes regardless of whether reservations are available.
How many wineries should I visit in one day?
For the best experience, we generally recommend planning to visit three to four wineries in a day.
While Seneca Lake wineries are relatively close together, wine tasting isn’t something you need to rush. Allow approximately 45–60 minutes at each winery, plus travel time between stops.
Three or four stops gives you time to enjoy your tastings, talk with winery staff, take in the views, have lunch and explore without spending your entire day racing from one tasting room to another.
Quality over quantity makes for a much better wine-tasting day!
Can you Uber between Seneca Lake wineries?
We do not recommend relying on Uber, Lyft or other rideshare services when wine tasting around Seneca Lake. Seneca Lake is a rural area, and rideshare availability can be very limited. You may be able to get a ride to a winery but have difficulty finding another driver when you’re ready to leave.
Fortunately, we have a number of transportation companies that specialize in Seneca Lake wine tours, as well as services that provide professional designated drivers. We strongly recommend arranging transportation in advance.
Can I bring children to wineries?
Some Seneca Lake wineries welcome families and children, while others offer experiences or environments that are better suited to adults.
Before visiting with children, check the policies of each winery you plan to visit. Remember that anyone consuming alcohol must be at least 21 years old and proof of age is required.
Please also note that Seneca Lake Wine Trail ticketed event weekends are intended for adults and individuals under 21 should not attend.
Can I bring my dog to Seneca Lake wineries?
Many Seneca Lake wineries are dog-friendly, but pet policies vary by winery. Some welcome dogs in outdoor areas only, while others allow well-behaved, leashed dogs in additional areas. CLICK HERE to see our list of dog-friendly wineries.
Always check the individual winery’s pet policy before visiting, keep your dog leashed unless you’re in a designated off-leash area, and remember that policies may change during special events.
Are Seneca Lake wineries open in winter?
Yes! Seneca Lake wineries are open year-round, and winter can be one of the most enjoyable times to visit. Tasting rooms tend to be quieter, making winter a wonderful opportunity for a relaxed tasting experience and more one-on-one interaction with winery staff.
Some wineries reduce their days or hours of operation during the winter, however, so we recommend checking current tasting room hours before setting out.
What time do Seneca Lake wineries close?
Most Seneca Lake winery tasting rooms generally close around 5 p.m., although hours vary by winery and season. Some wineries remain open until 6 p.m. or later, particularly during the warmer months, while others stop seating guests for tastings before the tasting room officially closes.
When planning your itinerary, don’t assume that arriving 15 minutes before closing will leave enough time for a tasting. Check each winery’s hours and last-tasting time before visiting.
Do Seneca Lake wineries serve food?
Some Seneca Lake wineries offer food, but not all do. Depending on the winery, options may range from snacks, cheese and charcuterie to cafés, restaurants and more substantial meals. Several wineries also offer special food-and-wine pairing experiences. Use the search function on our Explore Our Wineries page and simply check “Dining” to see the wineries with on-site restaurants.
If having lunch at a winery is part of your plan, research your options in advance rather than assuming every tasting room serves food. It’s also a good idea to check whether outside food is permitted before bringing a picnic.
Can I ship wine home from Seneca Lake?
Many Seneca Lake wineries can ship wine directly to customers in states where permitted by law. Shipping availability, costs and restrictions vary by winery and destination.
If you discover a wine you love, ask the winery staff about shipping options. They’ll be able to tell you whether they can ship to your home state and what options are available.
What should I wear wine tasting?
Seneca Lake wine country is relaxed, so there’s no need to dress up for a typical day of wine tasting. Comfortable, casual clothing is perfectly appropriate.
Comfortable shoes are especially helpful because you may spend time walking through vineyards, exploring winery grounds or enjoying outdoor seating. Finger Lakes weather can also change quickly, so layers are always a good idea.
If you’re visiting in winter, bring a warm coat and weather-appropriate footwear. During summer, sunscreen and sunglasses are helpful, especially if you plan to enjoy the wineries’ outdoor spaces.
Which town should I stay in when visiting Seneca Lake wineries?
The two primary communities at opposite ends of Seneca Lake are Geneva at the north end and Watkins Glen at the south end, and both make excellent home bases for exploring the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.
Geneva is a great choice if you’re looking for a walkable downtown, a strong restaurant scene, nightlife, historic architecture and a small-city atmosphere.
Watkins Glen is ideal if you want to combine wine tasting with waterfalls, hiking, lake activities and outdoor adventure.
You’ll also find wonderful lodging throughout the countryside surrounding Seneca Lake, including inns, bed-and-breakfasts, vacation rentals, cabins and even lodging at or near wineries.
How far is Watkins Glen from Geneva?
Geneva and Watkins Glen sit at opposite ends of Seneca Lake. Because Seneca Lake is approximately 38 miles long, traveling between the two communities generally takes about 45 minutes to an hour by car, depending on your route, traffic and stops along the way.
The good news is that wineries line both the east and west sides of the lake, so traveling between Geneva and Watkins Glen can easily become part of your wine-tasting itinerary rather than simply a drive from Point A to Point B.
Do I need a designated driver?
Yes. If you’re planning to drink wine during your visit, you should have a safe transportation plan before you begin your day.
That might mean having someone in your group serve as the designated driver or hiring one of the area’s professional transportation services. The Seneca Lake Wine Trail works with transportation providers offering private drivers, wine tours and other options.
Because Uber and Lyft are not reliable throughout our rural area, we do not recommend planning to use rideshare services as your primary transportation between wineries.
And remember: wine tasting doesn’t mean you have to finish every sample you’re poured. Taste responsibly, drink plenty of water, eat throughout the day and make safe transportation part of your trip planning
