On April 8, 2024, North America will experience a solar eclipse, which happens when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, blocking all or part of the sun. In the Finger Lakes, you can expect the eclipse to begin by 2:06 p.m., to be at maximum around 3:20 p.m., and to be over by 4:33 p.m.
The Seneca Lake Wine Trail is welcoming eclipse fans to the region with a tasting opportunity called Cheers to the Solar Eclipse. Click here to learn more.
Where to view
The rural setting of the Finger Lakes and Seneca Lake provide the perfect backdrop to view the eclipse. The city of Geneva, at the north end of Seneca Lake will be in totality for 2 minutes and 19 seconds. The partial eclipse will begin there at 2:07pm. The total eclipse will begin at 3:21pm, lasting until 3:23pm. The partial eclipse will conclude at 4:34pm.
Other areas throughout the region will offer varying periods of totality and partiality. To see the specifics by location, visit the Eclipse 2024 website.
