The Golden Nose Award: A Wine Judging Weekend
3/23/2006

Dear Friends of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail:

Thank you very much for your interest in this new and exciting event. We are posting this detailed events summary due to your expressed interest in The Golden Nose Award: A Wine Judging Weekend. To continue receiving more information about this event, as more details are determined, please sign up for our email mailing list on our website: http://senecalakewine.com/ContactUs.asp

What is the Golden Nose Award ~ The Finger Lakes Region has long been a producer of award-winning wines. Both domestically and overseas, dozens of wineries win prestigious awards every single year. However it has been over twenty years since a competition has been held specifically between Finger Lakes wineries only. But rather than bringing in a batch of professional tasters to adjudicate which wines are best, we are opting to invite you, the consumers, to judge. After all, what percentage of bottles of wine are sold to wine professionals? Very few. At the end of the day, it is your senses, your palates, and your noses that our wine must please. Thus the Golden Nose Award has been created.

Itinerary ~ While the core event takes place throughout Saturday, April 8th, 2006, this Wine Judging Weekend actually spans three total days: Friday April 7 through Sunday April 9, 2006.

Friday evening, Judges and their guest will be invited to an exclusive reception at the Rockwell Museum of Western Art. Located in Corning, New York's historic Gaffer District, this reception will include live music, delicious wine and food and an opportunity to mingle with your fellow Judges. While we won't be encouraging you to take a glass of red wine around the Andy Warhols or famous paintings by Newell Convers Wyeth, guests will be welcome to enjoy the opportunity to explore this unique museum dedicated to the art of the old, wild west. You can see more about the Rockwell Museum here http://www.rockwellmuseum.org This event is tentatively scheduled to run from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Attendance is not mandatory.

Saturday is the main event and will be hosted by the world-renowned Corning Museum of Glass (CMoG). Located only a couple blocks from the Rockwell Museum of Western Art, CMoG is an incredible experience unto itself. With state-of-the-art exhibits, live glass blowing demonstrations and an amazing gift shop this collection of glass-themed art, the largest in the world, spans all styles and eras. You can see more about CMoG here: http://www.cmog.org

9:00 am, Coffee and pastries, prepared by regionally famed chef, Brud Holland

From 10:00 am - Noon, Judges will sit side-by-side with Winemakers, professional wine Judges and veteran winery owners to learn the fine craft of sitting on a wine judging panel as you collectively judge the wines presented to you. You could read a Dummies guide about doing it, but as we all know, sitting down with friendly professionals and having them train us is a much more enjoyable and effective means of learning this art. Attendance is required.

Some of the industry veterans involved in this training component are:

  • Lorraine Hems, Lecturer RIT

  • Dave Whiting, co-owner Red Newt Cellars

  • Chris Stamp, co-owner Lakewood Vineyards, Inc.

  • Jim Trezise, President New York Wine & Grape Foundation

These speakers, and more, will cover a variety of aspects of Wine Judging, including technique, the chemistry of wine and wine-tasting, the vast array of different types of wines and more.

From Noon - 1:30 pm, Judges will enjoy a complimentary at the Corning Museum of Glass and get their palate ready for the judging lunch (this is an optional component). The Corning Museum of Glass will also be providing a complimentary Hot Glass Show from 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm.

From 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm the actual judging will take place. Professionals will be on hand to lend advice and help guide you- our novice Judges-through the process, continuing to answer questions and help make the experience pleasant yet effective. Hundreds of wines produced in the Finger Lakes Region will be represented. The exact categories are still being determined, but will range from the sweet intensity of Ice Wines to the sublime dryness of Pinots: virtually all types of wines will be present for this competition. Following the judging, Judges will be given a three hour window of time to rest, visit the museum and get ready for the evening. During this time, event staff will be collating the results and calculating the winners. Attendance is required.

From 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm a grand tasting will take place. The event will be a formal gathering, with fine catered foods and award winning wines being served in a grazing atmosphere. Judges and dinner attendees will have the opportunity to mingle and enjoy themselves while listening to live music and tasting some of the top wines in each category. The evening will culiminate in the best of class awards being presented by Assemblyman Jim Bacalles and newly appointed President of the Finger Lakes Tourism Alliance, Mike Rusinko.

Locally renowned Mike Lese and Friends will be performing their unique blend of covers and original songs, preceded by equally known musician John Manfredi. Furthermore, Chef William will be < a>demonstrating the preparation of wine-orientated dishes throughout the evening. William Cornelius, affectionately known as Chef William, has been a familiar cooking guru in the Elmira and Syracuse areas for several years now. This is due to the morning cooking segments he presents on NewsChannel 36 and WTVH (CBS), Channel 5 in Syracuse. Cooking with wine is his forte, and he always pairs his stunning culinary creations with a Finger Lakes wine.

Sunday will consist of several brunch opportunities at wineries on the southern end of all three major Finger Lakes: Keuka, Seneca and Cayuga. Everybody is invited, though there will be an additional, modest fee which will vary by host winery. This will be your first opportunity to purchase many of these award-winning wines. We recommend you take advantage of this opportunity, as many of these wines will sell out quickly this year.

Though details are still being determined, the following wineries are tentatively scheduled to participate in this component of the event including, but not limited to:

  • Glenora Wine Cellars and Veraisons Restaurant
  • Fox Run Vineyards
  • Knapp Winery and Restaurant
  • Red Newt Cellars
  • Sheldrake Point Vineyard and Cafe
  • Ventosa Vineyards
  • Wagner Vineyards

Cost: There are two types of tickets: one type for Judges and the other for Awards Dinner attendees. For couples where only one person is a wine enthusiast, we recommend buying one of each type.

  • Judges ticket = $200 (includes access to the Awards Dinner Saturday evening)
  • Awards Dinner ticket = $50

Aside from the unique experiences described above, judges will also receive a premium, stemless Riedel crystal commemorative glass emblazoned with our bold event logo, as well as other clever keepsakes to help commemorate this first annual event.

The elegant Staybridge Suites, located only 2 blocks away, will be the designated hotel of choice, with shuttles running between CMoG and the hotel regularly throughout the event. They will have a block of rooms reserved at a discounted price for Judges and their friends and family, using a code that will be conveyed to ticket holders with their physical tickets. The code used to access their discounted room rates is "GNA". The hotel can be reached at 607-936-7800.

Tickets for this event are available online now: https://www.senecalakewine.com/Reservations.asp Ticket quantities are highly limited, so please purchase your tickets promptly. Please ignore the "Starting Winery" attribute that our ticket system automatically inserts into every event: it is irrelevant to this event.

Corning, NY, Glass Sale ~ Additionally, independent of the Golden Nose, more than two dozen merchants, restaurants and hotels throughout the Corning, NY area will be organizing specials ranging from discounts on glass items at the Corning Museum of Glass to glass-blowing demonstrations at several businesses to food and lodging packages at several different sites. It will be a glass-lovers dream throughout the entire weekend. You can see more information about this simultaneous event at http://www.CorningNYGlassSale.com
