Golden Nose Award & May is Riesling Month! -April 2007 PDF Print E-mail

Dear Fans of the Trail:
This time we are keeping you updated on three different opportunities here in the Finger Lakes Region:

    * The Golden Nose Award: A Wine Judging Weekend
    * Rendezvous with Riesling
    * The Riesling to Visit Passport

THE GOLDEN NOSE AWARD: A WINE JUDGING WEEKEND
What is the Golden Nose Award?
The Finger Lakes Region has long been a producer of award-winning wines. Both domestically and overseas, dozens of wineries win prestigious awards every single year. However it had been over twenty years since a competition has been held specifically between Finger Lakes wineries only. But rather than bringing in a batch of professional tasters to determine which wines are best, we are opting to invite you, the consumers, to judge. After all, what percentage of bottles of wine are sold to wine professionals? Very few. At the end of the day, it is your senses, your palates, and your noses that our wine must please. Thus the Golden Nose Award has been created.

While the core event takes place throughout Saturday, May 19, 2007, this Wine Judging Weekend actually spans two days. Starting at the private reception at the Rockwell Museum of Western Art Friday evening, and ending Saturday night at the Corning Museum of Glass. Aside from the unique experiences described below, judges will also receive a premium commemorative wine glass emblazoned with our bold event logo to help commemorate this unique event. The elegant Staybridge Suites, and the renowned Hilton Garden Inn, will be the designated hotels of choice, with discounted room rates reserved for Judges and their companions. The Staybridge Suites can be reached at 607-936-7800, while the Hilton Garden Inn can be reached at 607-795-1111.

May 19, Saturday Training & Judging Sessions, is the main event and will be hosted by the world-renowned Corning Museum of Glass (CMoG). Located only a block from the Rockwell Museum of Western Art, CMoG is an incredible experience unto itself. With state-of-the-art exhibits, live glass blowing demonstrations and an amazing gift shop this collection of glass-themed art, the largest in the world, spans all styles and eras. You can see more about CMoG at their website, www.cmog.org.

For more information on the Golden Nose Award: A Wine Judging Weekend, you are welcome to call the Seneca Lake Wine Trail office toll-free during normal business hours at:  877-536-2717 or visit www.goldennose.com.

MAY IS RIESLING MONTH
As many of you are aware, May is officially Riesling Month here in the Finger Lakes Region! While Germany is the ancestral home of the Riesling grape, the Finger Lakes region continues to prove that it also is a superlative place to raise this sublime grape. Just recently, Fox Run Vineyards took home a Gold Medal at the Riesling Du Monde (Riesling in the world) Wine Competition held in Strasbourg, France. Fox Run Vineyards 2005 Riesling won Gold in the "Generic" category. The competition featured over 500 Rieslings from 12 countries that were submitted to the jury panel.

To help celebrate this venerable grape, and the Finger Lakes' renowned ability to produce award winning Riesling wines, here are two events we want to inform you about.

NEW YORK WINE & CULINARY CENTER KICKS OFF “MAY IS RIESLING” MONTH
On Thursday, May 3rd from 7 – 10 p.m. the New York Wine & Culinary Center will host “Rendezvous with Riesling” to honor New York State’s signature wine variety.  During this festive evening guests can sample Riesling and other wines from over 40 New York State wineries.

New York State Riesling wines are gaining national recognition. In the May 31, 2006 issue of Wine Spectator, writer Mitch Frank wrote regarding Rieslings:  “If you’d like to explore America’s next great wine region, there’s no need to look to the West Coast.  A quiet wine revolution has been taking place back east, in the Empire State.”

Each “Rendezvous with Riesling” guest will receive a souvenir wine glass and tote bag upon arrival.  In addition, guests can:

Taste regional cuisine, expertly prepared by Executive Chef Daniel Martello, including:
•    Braised Buffalo Tostadas
•    Hudson Valley Fresh Duck Spring Rolls
•    Long Island Blue Point Oysters
•    Finger Lakes Artisan Cheeses
•    Niagara Fruit Tarts

See live cooking demonstrations of Riesling-friendly food presented by local celebrity chefs:
•    Dano Hutnik of Danos Heuriger on Seneca in Lodi
•    Dan Eaton of “Cooking at Home” on R News Rochester

Enjoy live jazz entertainment in the Taste of NY Lounge by the Geoff Smith Group.
Tour the Center’s state-of-the-art facility.

Tickets are $45 per person and can be purchased by calling the New York Wine & Culinary Center at (585) 394-7070, or at any Wegmans “Thats T.H.E. Ticket” locations. You can see more about this event at the Culinary Center's website at www.nywcc.com.

THE RIESLING TO VISIT PASSPORT
Back by popular demand, and now in its second year, the Seneca Lake Wine Trail's Riesling to Visit Passport is an incredibly economical booklet, enabling people to visit each of the 28 participating wineries throughout the summer and receive a complimentary flight of tastings, most of which will contain a sample of that wineries' Riesling. At only $10 each this simple little booklet packs terrific value and is a fun way to affordably enjoy not just the Rieslings, but the many fine wines produced on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. Valid from May 1 - August 31 of this year, supplies are limited. Riesling to Visit Passports can be purchased at participating wineries or through the Trail website at www.senecalakewine.com.

Thank you for taking time to read this email and for your continued support of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.

Sincerely,

Paul and Glenda
